The Edward Carpenter Community
For men who love men

John Browne

John Browne passed away recently aged 71, after several years fighting cancer. He will be remembered by many as a long-standing participant and sometimes organiser of many ECC gatherings, and in particular those that were held in the Lake District.

Irish by heritage, and a devout Roman Catholic, he spent most of his adult life based in Preston where he was a well-respected and much loved member of his local community. A mental health nurse by profession, he then went on to become Preston Council's longest serving (Labour) councillor where he held his seat from 1983 until his death.

I shall remember John as a man who was an old-school socialist in the very best sense of the word, who held many strong and forthright opinions, but none the less was able to get on with a wide variety of people no matter what their background, beliefs, or politics. He was above all someone who cared about and took a great interest in people. I shall miss his many acts of kindness and friendship that he showed to me over the years, as well as his off beat sense of humour and wry observations on life.

Sleep easy John, I hope you are at peace where ever you are.

John Browne (1950-2022)
